This session focused on using an Orff Schulwerk approach with the popular kids TV show, Avatar: The Last Airbender. Orff Schulwerk is an elemental and active approach to teaching music where the students are the stakeholders in the creation and performances. I encourage teachers to use popular media in their classrooms because students are excited when their passions and interests are used in the classroom and when we validate students likes, we validate their identities.
Elemental Ostinato Creation Process
The teacher will....
- Introduce the different elements
- Have students explore and create with the different elements using their voices, motions, and body percussion.
- Encourage students to create ostinatos with the elements.
- Move the ostinatos to pitched and non-pitched percussion instruments.
